What is garden gate installation?

Garden gate installation is the fitting of a new gate, with its hanging post, hinges and latch, in a fence, wall or hedge. It also covers replacing a gate that has dropped, rotted or been damaged.

Timber side gate with strap hinges, diagonal brace and latch

Check the hanging post as carefully as the gate itself.

Signs you need garden gate installation

  • A gate that drags, will not latch or no longer closes
  • The frame has split, rotted or come apart
  • The hanging post leans or rocks
  • A side passage is open and needs securing
  • A gate that opens onto the road has become a hazard
  • The gate no longer matches the fence after a boundary upgrade

Garden Gate Installation: methods and options explained

  • Timber side gate. Ledged-and-braced or framed boards in softwood or hardwood. The usual, lower-cost option for a side passage.
  • Metal gate. Steel or wrought iron on solid posts. More expensive and heavier but longer-lasting and often more secure.
  • Double gates. Two leaves across a driveway, with a drop bolt and stops. Needs wider posts and a firmer base.
  • Gate with a lock or opener. A keyed lock, a self-closing mechanism or an electric operator for more security or convenience.

What to include when asking for a quote

Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom, because old walls and posts are rarely square. Say which way the gate should swing, what it hangs between and whether the ground slopes.

Tell the contractor whether the gate is for people or for bins and bikes, since a bin-width gate is wider and heavier. Say if the gate needs a lock, a bolt, a self-closing hinge or an opener.

The quote should state the gate size, material and thickness, the post type, the hinges and latch, the lock and who supplies each. If you are buying the gate yourself, ask the contractor to confirm it suits the opening before ordering.

How much does garden gate installation cost?

Typical UK costs for garden gate installation
Type of jobTypical cost
Single timber side gate on existing post£150–£300
New posts, frame, hinges and lock for a wider gate£300–£500
Double driveway gates or a metal gate£500–£700+

These are indicative UK budgeting figures, not fixed quotes. Gates with locks, metal frames or openers can go well above the top of the range.

If you supply your own gate, the labour price should drop, but ask the contractor to check the gate and fittings are suitable first.

The garden gate installation process: what to expect

  1. Measure. The opening, the ground level and the hanging post are checked.
  2. Prepare the post. A new or reinforced hanging post is set in concrete where needed.
  3. Hang. Hinges are fixed to post and gate, with an even gap all round.
  4. Fit hardware. Latch, bolt and lock are fitted and tested.
  5. Adjust. The gate is trimmed or shimmed so it shuts cleanly, and the site is tidied.

Planning permission and building regulations

Planning rules differ across the UK. Check with the local planning authority before changing a boundary, especially beside a road or at a listed property. The linked Planning Portal guidance is for England; local restrictions and removed permitted development rights can affect what is allowed. See the Planning Portal guidance on fences, gates and garden walls.

Check conservation area, listed building and estate rules before changing a gate, and agree changes to any shared access or right of way with those who use it.

An automated gate needs a specialist assessment of crushing and trapping risks, suitable safety devices and commissioning. See the HSE guidance on powered gate safety. Our garden-gate allowance is not a budget for a complete automated system.

How to choose a contractor for garden gate installation

  • Is the hanging post new, reinforced or reused?
  • What hinges, latch and lock will be fitted?
  • Does the gate swing inwards, onto your own land?
  • Who supplies the gate and the hardware?
  • What guarantee covers the gate and the fitting?

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fit a garden gate?

Our guide range is £150–£700. A single side gate on a sound post is at the low end, while double driveway gates or metal designs go above it.

Why does my gate keep dropping?

Usually the hanging post is moving or the frame has no diagonal brace. A new gate on a weak post will drop again, so the post often needs replacing.

Should the gate open in or out?

Into your own property. A gate that opens onto a pavement or road can be a hazard and may not be allowed.

What sort of lock suits a garden gate?

A latch with a hasp and padlock is common. A keyed gate lock or a bolt on the inside gives more security, and the strongest locks need a solid post to hold them.
